Health Insurance and Medical Care for International Students at the University of Pécs
Wednesday, 24 June, 2026
Valid health insurance covering healthcare services in Hungary is required for all international students enrolling at the University of Pécs.
Emergency Care
Emergency medical treatment and first aid are provided free of charge in Hungary. However, non-emergency healthcare services may require payment unless covered by valid insurance.
EU Students and the EHIC
Students from EU member states can access medically necessary healthcare in Hungary with a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), under the same conditions as Hungarian citizens. The EHIC covers necessary treatment during a temporary stay but does not cover planned medical procedures.
Private Health Insurance
Private health insurance is recommended for all international students. Students should obtain travel insurance before arrival and may arrange additional student health insurance after reaching Pécs.
The University of Pécs recommends the Generali STUDIUM Accident and Health Insurance, designed for international students aged 18–65 who are not covered by the Hungarian state health insurance system. The policy provides access to a wide range of healthcare services through the University's Clinical Centre, although certain treatments are excluded. The annual premium is approximately HUF 120,000.

In next week's article, we will introduce an alternative to private insurance: the Hungarian Social Security system. International students may be eligible to apply for a Social Security Card (TAJ card) and Social Security Number (TAJ number).
